One-Step Questions for Week #18 - Saturday, 1 June

Hi All -

There are no official One-Step questions for this week.  That doesn't mean I won't have a pop quiz on Saturday - it just means there are no official questions.

- Remember your Board Breaks are due this coming Saturday, 1 June.  Make sure you have at least one of the combinations memorized in case you get called on during class.

- Keep working on getting your forms checked off so you can move into the next segment of Palchugi forms (Ee, Sam and Oh).

Train hard and I'll see you on Saturday!

One-Step Questions for Week #19, 25th May 2013

Hello my Martial Art friends,

You will notice that this week's One-Step questions are a bit lighter as I want you to focus on getting your first set of three forms checked off by their Saturday, 25th May due date.  Remember that a Black Belt is a White Belt who NEVER gave up so keep doing what you need to and make progress on those forms.  You can arrange for private lessons.  You can ask a fellow candidate for feedback.  You can ask an available Black Belt to observe you and give you some tips.

Do what is necessary to become what you want to be - a Black Belt or a 2nd degree.  Remember that you already have the power inside you to succeed on your journey, its just a matter of keeping at it with determination and commitment of time, body and mind.

If you have the three forms checked off, start working on the next set and spend some extra time on your board breaks (due June 1st) and your weapons form research (weapons form due June 29th).

One-Step Questions, Week #19 -  25th May 2013

1.  I have Taegeuk Ee Jang checked off.

2.  I have Taegeuk Sah Jang checked off.

3.  I have Taegeuk Yuk Jang checked off (all 3 forms are due on May 25th).

4.  I have two board break combination written down (due June 1st).

5. I have practiced all 15 of my forms 2 times this week. 16 forms for 2nd degree.

6.  I have done 175 round kicks on the bags 2 times this week.  2nd degree candidates add one round of 500 round kicks on the bag.

7.  I have done 25 each of crunches 5 ways (125 total) plus 3 bridges at a 5 count 2 times this week.

8.  I have done 2 sets of 25 pushups 2 times this week (total of 100 pushups this week) focusing on technique and perfect pushups.

9.  I have done a run 2 times this week.

10.  I have 6 moves with my weapon that I have written down for my weapons form (don't have to be sequential - just moves you are probably going to use in your form).

11.  I have worked on my flexibility this week by doing dynamic stretches (especially Hamstring dynamic stretches like soldier kicks) when warming up for a workout and by doing static stretches (the stretch with the belt over your foot going as high as you can go with your knee straight and holding it for a 30 count).

Congratulations to this week's One-Step Winners!  Keep up the good work!

Procedure for getting a form checked off

Procedure for getting a form checked off:

1.  Ask someone - can be fellow candidate, black belt, instructor, private lesson etc. - to watch your form.

2.  Write down the things they tell you to work on and practice those items.

3.  Ask someone else to watch your form and tell them the things you were told to work on.

4.  Ask them if you have fixed those things and if they have anything else you need to work on.

5.  If they have given you additional items, write them down and work on them.

6.  When you are told you are ready for an Instructor to look at your form you can then ask for Instructor Dan or Instructor Marcia to observe you.  Be ready to tell them the things you have fixed as well as who has watched your form and who told you that you were ready to be seen for check off.

Getting a form checked off is kind of like crossing the street.  You look one way, then the other way, then back to the first direction again in order to be sure you are ready to cross the road.  There are a lot of you and only two people who can check off forms so make sure you are ready before you attempt to cross that road.

Keep working hard and remember that a Black Belt is a white belt who NEVER gave up!

One-Step Questions, Saturday 18 May Week #20

* Edited to add:  On Saturday, 18th May I will begin having you perform all 15 of the forms during class time as well as focused work on individual forms.  This is a heads up so you can make sure you practice all 15 and are prepared for week #20.

6. I have practiced all 15 of my forms 2 times over the past 2 weeks (1st degree), 4 times for 2nd degree.  Once you have these forms memorized it takes about 25 minutes to run all 15/16 forms back to back.

7.  I have video taped myself this week doing the form I am working on getting checked off and watched it to see where I need to improve - look at chambers, wrists, punch levels and elbow angles, foot placement and hip and shoulder alignment.

8.  I have done 150 round kicks on the bag 3 times over the past 2 weeks.  2nd degree candidates add one round of 500 round kicks on the bag.

9.  I have done 20 each of Crunches 5 Ways plus 2 bridges at 5 count, 3 times over the past 2 weeks.  2nd degree candidates - 30 each of Crunches 5 ways plus 5 bridges - 4 times over the past 2 weeks.

10.  I have done 2 sets of 25 pushups (50 total) 3 times over the past two weeks.  2nd degree candidates - 100 pushups broken into segments of 25 using 4 different techniques (wide, triangle, hands offset, tricep dips, etc.) 3 times over the past 2 weeks.

11.  I have done a run 3 times over the past 2 weeks.

12.  I have begun gathering ideas for my weapons form - this can be martial arts movie videos, You Tube, books, videos from the library, technique videos, etc.

13.  I have three moves with my weapon (trick, series of moves or special stances) that I have written down for my form (don't have to be sequential - just moves you are probably going to use in your form).

14.  I have practiced my double knives start to Taegeuk Sah Jang in the mirror checking for 90 degrees on the front chamber and back knife fully extended.  Do this for both sides.

15.  I have practiced my high block/ low block chamber in the mirror to check for wrist curls, arm placement and symmetry.
